The yard, early July edition
Jul. 3rd, 2023 12:44 pmThe woodpeckers fledged. The lanky adolescent rabbits are still around, though there are fewer of them. Squirrels have built a nest in one of our trees, so soon there will be baby squirrels for the dogs to chase, dammit.
What survived the rabbits is all flowering. The coneflower is a bit late, due to the rabbits, but we put a cage around it in time and it will flower. The borage is in bloom, as is the menarda. the bees are on both of those constantly, and it is glorious.
It rained a a couple weeks ago, and I mean it RAINED, so the yard is sort of back to its normal moisture content. I do have to go out and water every other day - the pots need watering, and the newer plants we are trying to foster in the face of rabbits.
The various mints are THRIVING, and, yes, we will regret that, but, my god, we had to plant SOMETHING that the rabbits did not eat!
The lemon mint we so loved from last year, the one we couldn't find seeds for anywhere this spring, well, it reseeded! In the ground! Sort of ... everywhere near where its pot had been! So, that's another one we might regret, but, honestly, I love the flowers and so does the insect population.
I weeded a bunch today, including getting the creeping charlie off of one of our flagstone paths. This job always reminds me of Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy clearing off the steps and floors of the ruin they find themselves in, and realizing they are in Cair Paravel.
Tomatoes are ripening, as are the cucumbers. I had snacked on many baby carrots as I thinned the carrot bed. I harvested broccoli today for the first time this year, and it looks great. Every day there is lettuce, or green peppers, or tomatoes, or something else delicious from the yard. The raspberries will be ripening soon as well.
The yard is a good thing.
