It's difficult knowing what to discuss
Nov. 1st, 2023 09:11 am1. I've been playing a lot of Minecraft. I did cut back this week, from 6-10 hours a day back to around 4-6 hours. But this does not lend itself to in-depth conversation.
2. I finished A Haunting on the Hill, by Elizabeth Hand. It's the authorized sort-of-sequel to Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House. (Made with permission from her estate.) It's a solid entry in the field. Non-spoilery notes are:
None of the narrative characters are likeable, and none of them are at all boring.
Jackson's original left it very vague as to whether there was a haunting or whether Nell was hallucinating. Hand's sequel chooses a path halfway through the book, and lands it very nicely.
I RACED through the denoument, loving every page. When I finished and thought about it, I realized that nothing particularly new or original took place.
In short if what you want is a VERY solid piece of classic haunted house literature, this is a winner. If you want a mind-bending experience, this is not it.
3. I spend a certain amount of every day wishing my health was better and I didn't feel so shitty. Also not a great conversation topic.
4. It snowed. Halloween was lovely anyway, and we did get some trick-or-treaters.
