Six days to the light
Dec. 16th, 2023 09:58 amActually, that count is debatable. Astronomically, the moment of tipping return is something on the 21st, which would be five days out. I googled "winter solstice 2023" and got the result of the 22nd. So, if you dispute my count, there it is.
It's not going to be a white Christmas, here. Instead, we shall have the neighborhood turkeys wandering through the yards, pecking at the remaining foliage. We shall have slightly damp squirrels shaking off the rain. We shall have the over-wintering juncos sitting on the fence, getting the seeds that the turkeys don't reach.
I wonder how many white Christmases the future will hold, what with the changing climate.
But, whatever we do to the globe, the return of the light will remain the same.
My great-grandfather was Danish, and proudly so. In Scandinavia some people celebrate St. Lucia, said to be martyred on the shortest day of the year. In this celebration, a woman wears a headdress of candles, a living pillar of light in the darkness.
Six days until the light begins its return; for now it's up to us to be pillars of flame in the darkness.
