The light returns

It's actually incredibly gloomy and overcast where I live today, not a sky full of returning light, but I'll take it.
There is something I love about this day after the longest night, and that is that, well, pretty much nothing changes. Today is much the same as yesterday. The problems one had yesterday are largely still here today. The tasks one put off until later are still waiting for later to come along. It is still col, it is still winter, and we have yet to reach the coldest parts of the year where I live.
The change in light today is measured in seconds. Around thirty seconds more light. Not enough to see or feel. Not enough to make a difference.
Except, well, it's still change. It's a real change, a measurable change. It is a small change on which later changes will build and stack. In a few weeks it will be noticeable. And by the equinox we will be able to see it each day.
I love this, even though I wish it was instantly lighter longer, because it is a relentless reminder that this is how change actually works. Changing one's one habits, changing a city's ordinances, changing someone's mind, this is how it works. Every Huge Change Out Of No-where is actually the end result of a series of small changes building on each other, it's just that you didn't know or notice.
Today the light returns.
